We’ve seen your PJs; we’ve witnessed you come back to the future; we were inspired by your patriotic class colors, but Red, Black, and Bow day is the crown jewel of spirit week.

Each student gets one spirit point for wearing black and red and an additional point for each bow.  Junior Sydney Rossman’s shirt had, you guessed it, 2,017 bows.

The tradition of the bows is represented best by the tradition of the  “band bow dress.”

The dress has been passed down for longer than the current band members can remember. Then it is covered in more than two thousand tiny ribbon bows: specifically 2,016 to represent the senior class’s graduating year. Each year, one bow is added.

The dress has been passed through the flute section of the band since it was created. After each year, the current dress-wearer chooses an upcoming senior to wear the dress next year.

“It was an honor for me to be chosen. It’s going to be so hard to choose the flutist who wears it next year,” said current dress-wearer Madeline Grohl.

Shyla Herndon, Class of 2015 chose Grohl last year.
