On December 18, Mrs. Kate Lane’s first period Independent class enjoyed cooking “better than McDonald’s chicken nuggets” with homemade fries and a side of iced tea.

In their lab groups, students were delegated specific tasks when cooking the meal.

Junior Bri Boivin said, “In my cooking group, I was in charge of breading and cooking the chicken. I already knew how to cook chicken, but I learned new techniques on how to properly bread chicken.”

They breaded and fried the chicken in a pot with oil and cooked the fries in the oven for 20-25 minutes.

The Independent Living class has cooking labs to learn how to cook meals with cost constraints in mind. In the past they have made cookies, pancakes, Panera Mac and cheese and breakfast burritos. While cooking different meals, students learn specific techniques that they need to know in order to cook for themselves in the future.

“Making the chicken nuggets was a blast. The chicken and fries tasted great, and I’m glad I know how to make chicken nuggets” Boivin said.
