The Academic Team wins third annual spelling bee

Can you spell “quadragenarian?”

On Wednesday April 8th, members of the Academic Team, including, Alex Peterson, Andrew Tran, Leigh Rankin , and Sean Verma won the 3rd annual spelling bee by 6-5 against the staff. The third team, the NEHS, lost in the first lightning round.

The NEHS team was the host of the spelling bee, and Mr. Jeremy Brown was master of the ceremonies. Some of the words were taken from a list of every misspelled word from the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and the rest were taken from a list of common SAT words.

Isabella Marcellino,  the President of NEHS  helped Brown  keep score through the entire event. The spelling bee included two regular rounds and two lightning rounds with buzzers. There were player swaps at the end of each round, and each person could ask for the definition of that word, the language of origin, and use  in a sentence. The competitors could talk with one another to see if they all agreed on the spelling.

The first round, it was 0-0-0, and for a few subsequent rounds, it remained that way until the Academic Team correctly spelled “quadragenarian,” which is a person between 40 and 49 year old. After the regular rounds ended, the lightning rounds began, and the score was Academic Team 4, Staff 4, and NEHS with 2 points.

Soon though, the Academic Team won with a total of 6 points, and they were congratulated with bottles of honey  (Get it? Honey = Spelling BEE)for winning. All-and-all, it was a fight to the finish, and everyone proved their worth whether they won or lost!

Staff Participants included Mrs. Laura Scuffins, Mr. David Kehne, Mr. Andrew McWilliams, Mrs. Tracey Cassidy, and Mrs. Charyl Novotny

NEHS Participants were Ryan Stark, Isabella Tilmont, Carter Schmidt, Emre Tkacik
