Seahawk’s Score Garofolo as New Soccer Commit

National Signing Day is a day where senior athletes sign their letters of intent to play a college sport. Ines Garofolo signed to Saint Mary’s College of Maryland to play soccer on February 1.

Saint Mary’s College is a four-year liberal arts college located in St. Mary’s City, Maryland. Ines is the second athlete to commit to Saint Mary’s this year. In November, Anthony Sparacino committed to play lacrosse at the college.

Ines has been on the varsity soccer team for her junior and senior years, playing 36 games and a total of 2,221 minutes of time on the field. This year she finished the season with two assists.

She was nominated for CMC All Conference and All County honorable mention both her junior and senior years.  She played in two state finals and three regional finals. Junior year she was an offender but switched to defense senior year to help the team.

“She became a serious threat offensively from the defensive side. Which, if you know anything about soccer, makes good teams great,” said varsity coach Howard Putterman.

Ines is hesitant about how she will manage both academics and athletics, but she is eager to step on the field as a college player and student.  She likes the dynamic and honesty that both the team and the coach of Saint Mary’s College have to offer.

She participated in Saint Mary’s summer camps. She received other college offers from schools but turned them down because they were too far from home.

“I’ve always wanted to play soccer in college, and Saint Mary’s has a great psychology program.” said Garofolo.

Vicky Garofolo is proud and happy that her daughter has been accepted to college.  Her involvement with Ines’ final college decision was only to support her. She did not want to choose the college for her.

Mrs. Garofolo is always worried about her daughter getting hurt but loves to watch her play and plans to attend as many games as possible.

“I never influenced her on what to do. She is an adult now and has to take that step of independence,” said Mrs. Garofolo.
