The AFC Champion New England Patriots (14-2), led by quarterback Tom Brady, met the NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons (11-5), led by QB Matt Ryan, in Super Bowl LI, or 51, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Sunday, February 5, 2017.

At halftime, the Falcons led the Patriots 21-3, and the game appeared to be over.

Class of 2020 member Billy Higgins said, “I did not believe that they could come back, even though I have so much faith in my team.”

The Falcons scored again towards the beginning of the third quarter, seeming to seal the win, but the Patriots were not going to go down quietly. The team put together a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that ended with a five-yard pass to running back James White to answer and pull back within three scores; however, Patriots kicker Stephan Gostkowski missed the extra point. The Patriots trailed 28-9 at the end of the third and had 15 minutes left to tie the game.

The next quarter for Atlanta proved to be a complete disaster with sacks, penalties, and a fumble.

Julian Edelman was surrounded by three Falcons, and Brady launched the ball in his direction. The ball was deflected by a Falcon and seemed to hit the ground just as Edelman grabbed it. However, shown in replays from every angle, the ball hit off of another Falcons foot, with Edelman right there to catch the deflection, giving the Patriots excellent field position to score another touchdown and two-point conversion to get the game going into overtime.

Hanna Dufresne proudly wore her Patriots jersey ,after the win and said, “Edelman is my favorite player and my favorite play was his amazing catch. I was so proud and glad that he helped to secure the win.”

Higgins also said, “The catch by Edelman was beautiful and a real game changer.”

The Patriots carried their momentum into overtime, showing how experienced they are. Mental toughness and physical fatigue turned out to be a large deciding factor.

Tom Brady led one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. This game was highlighted by an amazing catch by Julian Edelman that helped to lift the Patriots’ from a 25-point deficit, to become Super Bowl Champions.

Coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady received their fifth Super Bowl win, and was unarguably their sweetest one.

Hunter Wolf said, “The big end celebration and all of the confetti was my favorite part of the game.”
