Mrs. Leslie Byrd, Mr. Benjamin Conte, and Ms. Allyson Partner’s math classes are collecting canned foods to take to St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Libertytown.

“The students have been doing great and bringing in cans like crazy,” Byrd said.

The students watched a video called “Hunger Hits Home”  about childhood hunger in America.

Class of 2018 member, Erin Warholic, said, “It’s not fair that the government has money to spend on funding food for people who need it, and they let it just sit around until it is completely cut. It is very sad to see how many people don’t have food.”

This is part of the students’ service learning requirement in the core classes. There are some suggested tasks, or the instructor can create something new.

The learning can be connected to the course and at the end a reflection piece is written about what you learned and how you served the community.

For the learning task of this project the students math measurements of the cans.

The last day for the food drive was Friday, January 20.  The students collected more than three boxes of cans.
