Tango and more: Dancing with the Addams Family

On April 6th the theater department will be putting on the acclaimed musical,  Addams Family. For the past two months a cast of over 25 actors and actresses have been rehearsing after school.

The musical has many moving parts including singing and acting, but it is the dancing that provides a visual spectacle during the show’s 21 songs.

While only four songs have the full ensemble on stage to dance, almost every song has some dance elements and the responsibility for choreographing those dances has fallen on the shoulders of Mrs. Angela Smithhisler and senior Maddie Frick.

Mrs. Smithhisler,  first year theatre/dance teacher, and, senior, Maddie Frick are the show’s choreographers and are in charge of assembling the moves for all the cast members.

To get a spooky vibe and still deliver a fun dance, Smithhisler has been using rhythmic jazz influences combined with the iconic zombie-like movements of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

“While most of the show has that zombie vibe some dances stand out and are more smooth,” said Smithhisler.

This is Smithhisler’s first time choreographing a full show, and she has met many challenges, but with the help of Maddie Frick and the effort of the cast the dances are coming together.

Smithhisler’s favorite dance is the tango. The tango has proven the most challenging dance and Smithhisler brought in professional tango teacher, Clive Butler, to assist with the production. (See Smithhisler and Butler demonstrating the tango in the video.)

“The tango is very vibrant and it has been very fun to see the students pick up this difficult choreography, The students have really risen to the occasion and their effort will make the show great,” said Smithhisler.

The Addams Family will open on April 6th at 7:00 PM. See the tango and many other dances performed by the Addams Family cast throughout this fun show. Shows are also on April 7 at 7:00 PM, April 8 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and April 9 at 2:00 PM. Tickets can be bought online or at the door.
