The Varsity Softball team ended their season with a tough loss against Northern Calvert  May 19 at Bachman Softball Park in Glen Burnie. The game was the 3A state semi- final game and the Lancers lost 5-0. This is the same team that the Lancers lost to last year at states. Despite the tough loss, the team had a successful season.

Their overall record was 10-2, losing to the Urbana Hawks two times before defeating them 7-5 in the regional semi-final.

The team is lead by Coach Andrea Poffinberger and depended largely on underclassmen.  They only had three seniors this season: Madi Ambush,  Jordan McLain and Kristen Durbin . However, Ambush tore her ACL during an All Star basketball game in March and has not played.  Ambush continued to provide support from the sidelines.

Since Ambush was out, Poffinberger had to alter her lineup and adjust to a lead player being out of the game. The younger players rose to the challenge.

Poffinberger says that when they lost Madi, “The players accepted where we were at and the juggling that had to be done to make things work. They became one anothers\’s supporters and coaches and continued to grow.”

Sophomore and a captain of the team, Lauryn Lovewell says, “Being a captain this year was fantastic because it allowed me to see how good of a leader I was with Madi being out.”

Lovewell says that sophomore Kennedi Ambush stepped up as well and was a great leader.  Lovewell explains that Ambush’s injury took a toll on the team but it allowed them to show everyone that with Madi’s support they can still succeed.

Poffinberger says that she couldn’t be prouder of the way the girls played this season and last night. They had amazing defensive plays and were “solid overall.”

Poffinberger says, “I am very pleased with the season. Going into the season states wasn’t even a goal and about halfway through we began to think we could do it. The students worked and played extremely hard.”
