During a major sports event, the halls are painted with red and black.  Today’s color was green, and lots of it.   In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here are 7 little-known facts about the holiday:

  1. The first St. Patrick’s celebration took place in America in Boston, MA, 1737.
  2. There are no female leprechauns.
  3. St. Patrick’s real name was not Patrick but instead Maewyn Succat. He took the name Patrick when he became a priest.
  4. Each year in Chicago, they dye their river green for St. Patrick’s day.
  5. The traditional Irish meal that is eaten on St. Patrick’s day is not corned beef and cabbage (which is actually Jewish) but instead lamb or bacon with potatoes.
  6. Shamrocks were used by St. Patrick to symbolize the holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
  7. We wear the color green on St. Patrick’s Day due to its connections with springtime and the Irish landscape.
