We’ve all seen stage combat on our TV’s and smartphones, now drama students go behind the scenes on how it’s done.

First students practiced the unit by doing hand on hand combat, then progressed towards using props.

“To teach the Stage Combat Unit we have to go move by move, first punching then choking and etc, because there is a very specific way in maneuvering for student safety. The students also has to master the knap (sound made when hitting). By now they have learned over 30 different moves and are working on their final project,” said Mr. Julian Lazarus.

Stage combat when first started had mixed emotions from the drama students.

“I’m not a very violent person, so this was new and different to me. I’ve never even slapped a person so I had to first learn how to do that,” said Class of ’19, Macy Armagost.

Unlike Armagost, Hanna Dufresne had a different view, “Stage combat is actually really easy once you learn it. I was excited for this unit.”

Maggie McCrossin agreed although, “Last unit, the stage makeup, was my favorite.”
