As senior club leaders graduate, we are left to ask ourselves, who will take their place?  Lancer Media asked three of the major club leaders their opinion.

Key Club

Liz Moore is a leading role in Key Club, a service organization that reaches all over the United States.

“Key Club is the largest and oldest community service high school organization. It’s based on leadership, community service, as well as character building,” Liz said.

The Key Club is one of the largest clubs in Linganore. She has big shoes to fill, but who will take her place?

“I passed on the torch to Evan Avila, so he is lucky enough to be elected and be the one student from Linganore who gets to represent many clubs in this area,” Moore says.

Though she is leaving the high school branch of the Key Club, Moore does not intend to leave Key Club.

“There are other branches like CKI, the branch for college. Lucky enough, the college I am going to offers CKI. I do intend on joining,” she says.

Evan adds, “I am honored and I’m looking forward to next year to have the opportunity to serve others in my community.”

SGA

SGA President, senior Kyle Johnson has had his ups and downs of being in charge, but now it’s time for his Vice President, Matt Watson, to take his place.

“My Vice President will now be the President, and he has done an awesome job the past two years, so he knows exactly what he is doing and will do great.”

As SGA discusses major topics  plans school events, there will be much responsibility for the officers. “It helped me with teaching, responsibility, and public speaking. Also it helped teach me how to be a good leader and a bad leader, ” Johnson said.

He’s hopeful his replacement will be a much better President than he was, although it proved to be a good learning experience for him. “I think next year there will be some more follow through on commitment because he will be a better president than I was,” Kyle says.

Not only club leaders will be passing the torch this year. Auditions were held for drum major, the student leaders of the marching band.

Drum Major is a very demanding position and takes a lot of leadership skills and dedication. Julia Peigh is the sole drum major leaving, while Junior Noah Ismael keeps his position. Also taking the position of drum major is Junior Neesa Conolan.

Julia Peigh, Senior Drum Major says, “It was a lot of responsibility but it was also a lot of fun. It was great to get a chance to see different parts of the band as a whole.” Julia’s experience as drum major has helped her hone her leadership skills and has made her a better person, boosting her confidence.

Peigh says, “It takes a significant sense of personal responsibility, without being shaken by big crowds.”

As Julia leaves us for college, she will be continuing her journey with Marching Band at the University of Maryland.

Newest Drum Major, Neesa Conolan says, “I’m very excited to be leader of an entire group, and I think it will benefit the whole band to have me and Noah as Drum Majors.”
