Tired of paper flashcards? History teacher Janvier Beaver recommends the app Quizlet that will eventually eliminate paper flashcards.

Quizlet is a free app available on both Apple and Android market that students mainly use as a study tool.

Beaver said, “I love using Quizlet to help students study for exams. In history class, there are an abundance of vocabulary terms and Quizlet helps students memorize the material.”

Usually any teacher that endorses this app has a classroom on Quizlet that students can join. In each teacher’s classroom, they will have sets of terms grouped by which vocabulary test they appear on.

If a student needs to study for a test that doesn’t have a set made by the teacher then the student can look for a public set that suits their needs. However, if the student cannot find a suitable set, they can make their own. On average, creating a 25 word set takes 15 to 20 minutes. This is hardly a difficult task for a student considering how much of a hassle paper flashcards are.

Freshman Margaret Clugston prefers Quizlet immensely to flashcards. “Quizlet works well for me. I used Quizlet to study for history and got a perfect score on my vocabulary test,” said Clugston.

Unlike other study apps, Quizlet offers more options than flipping through digital flashcards. This mobile app captivates students of all ages with its unique matching game.

The matching game is great for learning vocabulary because students must commit each word to memory in order to quickly complete a set. Teachers can take advantage of a student’s competitive spirit by proposing a competition to see who in the class can get the highest score on a set.

By masquerading studying as a game, it becomes less of a chore to students. No longer is studying met with dread, instead it is met with a renewed sense of excitement.

In the future, Beaver believes that more practical apps, such as Quizlet, will exist and be used frequently.

Beaver said, “Anything is possible at the rate we’re going.”
