Animals 101 is a club whose purpose is to spread awareness about animal neglect and members help raise funds to help save animals in crisis in the Frederick area. Each club day, they have a speaker talk about humane education.

The club was founded in 2008 as a horse club when Linganore was at Oakdale. Several Pre Vet students thought it would be helpful to learn more about animals:  the Animals 101 club was born.

On the November club day, Animals 101 held a fundraiser with Yankee Candle to support the TipMe Frederick, spay and neuter rescue for feral cats. Animals 101 had a speaker from TipMe Frederick talk about the techniques they use to identify an animal with shots and vaccinations. TipMe Frederick tips ears of stray cats to show if they are free of rabies and life threatening diseases.

“Our mission is to spread the trend of tipping animal ears,” Barbra from TipMe Frederick commented. “It is easier to show the animal is vaccinated.”

“We do fundraisers to make money to donate to rescues, Animal Control, Frederick County Humane Society, TipMe Frederick, Days End Horse Rescue, United to Save Animals, who help low income people to pay for their spay or neuter dog/ cat so that they can keep them in their forever home,” Mrs. Karen Burall said.

They talk about any animal in the book, from a-z, or from Alpaca to Zebra. They talk about investing in animals, pasture management, humane education, healthcare, and grooming. Mrs. Burall has a variety of animals, from fifteen cows to four goats. She says she’s a cowgirl and she knows it.

Animal 101 members also participates in the community shows and Santa’s work shop. Members help children assemble make and take bookmarks with animal stickers.

“Some speakers bring in animals to show,” said senior Kayla Mobley, club leader. Sometimes the speaker has a motivational speech about these animals and shows the club how difficult it is to control everything in the animal world.

This next club day Animals 101 is having a holiday fest and sandwich sale. See Mrs. Burall if you are interested in attending.
